Anthony Ferraro, 44, joined Synergy Media Group more than a decade ago as a security technician and has since worked his way up the company ranks to become a project manager for the Warrendale, Pa.-based design/build technology integration firm focused on AV, security and telecom systems.

His success story serves as an inspiration for the unsung heroes of the security industry, who might wonder if the work they’re doing is being noticed by their managers or if their careers will advance beyond security technician status.

This is the sixth Q&A in our National Security Technician Day series, continuing the Foundation for Advancing Security Talent’s annual celebration of the men and women who do the most important work in the security industry every day.

We plan to keep them going–with your help. If this story or any of the others in the series resonate with you, please let us know who should be the next security technician in the spotlight.

What’s one installation that’s been particularly memorable or made you proud?

We recently did an installation for one of our local Pittsburgh non-profit clients. The building resembled a World War 2 bunker, and it made the installation challenging. It was the type of project that haunted me in my sleep and made me wonder if I should have just said no!

Our technicians were put to the test and were able to highlight their awesome mechanical skills. We had to fish wires down block walls on doors without existing wiring and had to cut both exterior metal door jambs and interior wooden door jambs to install new electronic strikes. We also had to install new locksets on interior slab doors that were not outfitted with existing hardware.

After several days of good, hard, work, we handed the customer a custom retrofitted door access system that looked like it had always lived in the space.

How did you become a security technician and why do you love the security industry?

I got hired as a technician in 2012 with Synergy Media Group. I’ve always had a passion for electronics, big sound, and technology. Our bread and butter is technology design-build and integration. In addition to security integration, we also provide audiovisual, IT, and structured cabling integration for our clients.

Getting to provide clients across several industries the technology they need to thrive is incredibly rewarding, especially when they reach out and express how they’ve been using the tech. We’re able to program access control and video surveillance systems to integrate into existing company systems which allow them a seamless integration from their previous systems.

Going into my 12th year at Synergy Media Group, I have worked my way up to project manager and oversee our group of technicians. I’m still able to get out into the field and work on installations myself, which is something I’ve always loved.

As our projects get bigger, it’s incredible to see the team working together for the same goal of providing our clients with the best of the best.
